Why
are some issues neglected?
Some environmental issues that tend to
be neglected:
- coal - SO2 emissions, CO2, NO, acid
rain, respiratory disease, occupational
hazards
- cars - casualties, pollution, urban
sprawl, disruption of neighbourhoods, destruction of
bushland, energy use, stress
Are issues chosen on the basis of
urgency? emotional appeal? Brian Martin puts forward the
following reasons:
Personal
Involvement
- activists feel they must set an
example so they avoid issues such as cars because they
depend on cars themselves
Entrenchment
- some issues involve powerful
economic and political interests and seem too
difficult to tackle
Campaign
Focus
- some issues have obvious campaign
foci such as nuclear accidents
Social
Class
- environmentalists tend to have
middle and upper class concerns
Lack
of Strategy
- tendency to react, respond to
immediate threats
