Engineering and environment may seem unlikely bedfellows to many people. Yet, economic development and the provision of housing and urban services for an expanding population require, as never before, the application of technology in a manner that provides for the needs of future generations.

In 1986, the Institution of Engineers issued a Code of Environmental Practice to its members. It released a Policy on Sustainable Development in 1989 and a Policy on the Greenhouse Effect the same year. Since then, the Institution has had workshops and seminars around Australia in a program aimed at educating its members (52,000 in April) on sustainable development.

The 1991 National Engineering Conference in Hobart devoted itself to 'Development and the Environment' and the Northern Engineering Conference in Mackay, Queensland, in June has the theme 'Sustainable Development'.

The Institution of Engineers is currently holding an inquiry into the ethics of engineering companies conducting environmental assessments for projects and their tendering for subsequent work.
