The first Earth Summit was held in June 1992 in Rio de Janeiro.
It's official name was the United Nations Conference on Environment
and Development (UNCED). It was attended by tens of thousands of
people, including parliamentarians, religious leaders, environmentalists
and heads of state as well as thousands of journalists. Government
representatives from 178 countries were present.
They all met to work out ways to achieve sustainable development
and to forge agreements and treaties between nations to that end.
