Facebook says it finds 67 million to 137 million fake accounts each year. Twitter has admitted to around 8.5% of all Twitter accounts probably being bots but researchers have estimated that the real figure is more like 9 to 15% of active Twitter accounts. “Instagram is littered with millions of bots that copy people’s profiles, share their photos and leave comments on images.”
In 2013 an estimated 61.5 percent of internet traffic was bots, compared with 51% in 2012. About half of these bots were search engines or ‘good’ bots. The rest were ‘scrapers’ that stole information, hackers, spammers or impersonators (20% of all internet traffic).
