Hill and Knowlton and Burson Marsteller are perhaps the two largest and most influential public relations firms in the world. The services each offers range from public relations to political lobbying, grassroots organising and gathering intelligence on environmental activists. For work such as this they make hundreds of millions of dollars each year.

Both have been involved in protecting some of the worst industries of our times, downplaying the health effects of smoking on behalf of the Tobacco Institute, keeping public concern at a minimum after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and helping to clean up ExxonÕs image after the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
